Bed Bug Identification and Control

Bed bugs have made a major comeback in North America. These small, parasitic insects get their name because they usually hide in beds. However, they can also squeeze into cracks and crevices in old furniture, floors, and ceiling joints that aren’t fully sealed.

Color – Adult bed bugs appear reddish brown. Meanwhile, nymphs (young bed bugs) are more amber in color, and their eggs are tiny and white.

Length – Bed bug eggs measure about 1mm. In comparison, adults grow to just under 1/4 inch and have a flat, oval shape.

Diet – Bed bugs feed only on blood. Unlike mosquitoes, they bite without being noticed until after the feeding ends.

Habitat – Most commonly, these pests live in beds and mattresses. Additionally, they often hide in furniture, floorboards, ceilings, and even cardboard boxes.

Impact – Although they don’t carry disease, bed bugs can still cause problems. Their bites leave behind itchy, red welts that lead to discomfort and frustration.
